Easter
Easter is an important time for us at St John's. At its core, Easter focuses on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, affirming the belief in his victory over death and sin. This event symbolises hope, redemption and renewal, serving as a testament to God's immense love and mercy towards us.
Easter is not merely a historical event but a living reality that continues to shape us. It's a time of joyous celebration and it's the ultimate reminder that, no matter how dark things may seem, there's always a glimmer of hope waiting to shine through.
This song by Phil Wickham is a beautiful narrative of the importance of the Easter weekend!

Phil Wickham - Sunday Is Coming
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope that all of our students have had a restful break and are ready to engage with a very busy term. At St John’s, we love involving school families and their friends in school community events. This term, we are delighted to have significant events coming up such as the Mother’s Day Chapel, the Athletics Carnival and our inaugural Bush Dance.
Last week you would have received an invitation to our annual Mother’s Day Chapel and Morning Tea, which is being held on Friday 10th May. A huge thank you goes to parent volunteers, Laura Pallet and Hannah Merkel, for their time in setting up and assisting students select their gifts at the Mother’s Day stall today.
On Monday 29th April, some of our teaching and learning team were able to engage in professional development with Kim Powell, a consultant from Lutheran Education VIC, NSW & TAS (LEVNT). Kim guided them through a refresher on Project Based Learning (PBL), and it was clear to see high levels of engagement and enthusiasm for this term’s PBL units as they came up with new ideas and new ways to create student buy-in.
The aim of PBL is to help students apply their knowledge and skills to real life contexts in ways that serve others. Please see the diagram below which demonstrates the link between student motivation and service learning which has a positive impact on the world around them.
Student Led Clubs
At the beginning of each term we seek student feedback and make changes to student led clubs. We encourage you to talk to your child about the clubs that they may have been involved in, and help them come up with new ideas for what they could explore!
We are seeking volunteers!
Our Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 students have been working very hard in their InitiaLit lessons and are keen to read aloud to some adults! We want to provide our students with as many opportunities to read as possible, as this builds confidence and allows them to use the skills being taught. If you (or a grandparent etc.) would be interested in coming in once a week and helping out in the Kinder, Year 1 or Year 2 classrooms with 1 on 1 reading with students, we would love to have you come in! We do require that all volunteers have a current Working With Children Check (WWCC), which can be applied for here. There is no cost associated with this check, as it is a volunteer check that is being sought. Please make contact with your child’s class teacher/s if you, or someone you know, would be interested in listening to students read.

Life Groups
We’re starting weekly groups for adults to get together to talk about life and faith. ‘Christianity in Context’ looks at today’s social issues through a Biblical lens to understand the many different positions Christians come to on any given topic. ‘The Story of the Bible’ looks in depth at what was happening during Bible times to understand what message the entire Bible is telling.
Life groups can be run in person or online and are open to anyone. If you are interested in either of these groups, please contact Peter – [email protected]

Our next Kid’s Church is on May 17 with the theme of God the Creator. Christians believe that God made the universe out of an act of loving creativity. As part of the service, we will be making our own creations out of lego, blocks, craft, and other mediums. Come along from 6pm for a free sausage sizzle. Our year 5 band will be leading us in musical worship for the first time! If you would like regular updates on St John’s Chapel, click here to sign up for our newsletter. ANZAC DAYWe had the pleasure of Adam Paris joining us on the last day of Term 1 to speak to us about Anzac Day and share his own experiences of the armed forces. The students loved how interactive the experience was. They smelled rosemary, some tried on items of clothing, Adam showed them his medals and even Miss Mel tried on a parachuting helmet. They all walked away knowing about the importance of Anzac Day.
FAREWELL MR SHANE and MR MILES
Our Year Two Team Class have been so blessed to have Mr Miles do his practicum in our Year Two class. He has spent four weeks with us and we have loved having him apart of our class.
Also we sadly say farewell to Mr Shane and Mrs Christine who too have been our Year Two Learning Coaches. What a blessing they have been. We wish them the very best in their next adventures.
MRS M and BABY OLIVIAAt the end of last term the Year Two’s were very excited to have a visit from Mrs M and baby Olivia.
PBL SHOWCASE TERM 1
PBL Showcase Term 1During the last week of term the Year Two’s enjoyed sharing with the students of St john’s a physical activity that was exclusive, improved health and fitness and was safe and fun. A special thank you to Mr L who shared his passion of skateboarding with his daughter and they indeed inspired many students to trial a new physical, fun activity.
FUN WITH OUR YEAR 2 BUDDIES!
The Year 34s were excited to get together with their Year 2 buddies at the start of the term. Students got to know about each other by completing a profile and then going on a nature scavenger hunt. Thank you, Mrs Schulz, for organising the activities. We look forward to meeting up on a regular basis this year.
WELCOME MAX
The class have enjoyed getting to know a new student, Max, that has started this term. We hope Max has had a great start in our class.
TERM 2
What a great start to Term 2 the class has had. We have settled well into our temporary classroom and routines are running smoothly. We welcome Miss Georgia Stein to our class and the students are loving having her.
GREAT START TO TERM 2
Years 5/6 have had a great start to Term 2, kicking straight back into the routine of things. We look forward to another busy term, which will involve Year 5’s starting to spend time with their Little Saints buddies, and Year 6’s continuing with their leadership initiatives.
Physical Activity & Exercise
“Research shows, regular physical activity and exercise leads to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, improves learning and reduces ‘stress chemicals’ like cortisol.
”Dr Michael Carr-Gregg"
Physical activity and exercise is not only vital to a child’s overall development but it has so many other benefits. With children spending more time on computers being sedentary, it is even more important to get kids moving more. As well as maintaining a healthy weight, it also improves concentration by helping to establish connections between different parts of the brain. It helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. On an emotional level, it reduces stress and anxiety while improving posture and sleep. Physical activity and exercise is good for your child’s health, now and in the future. Parents should encourage their kids to move or play sport at every opportunity – in and out of school.

Reminder
Strict 'no hat no play' rules apply at here at ThierCare, so remember to bring one along just in case and we can enjoy the sunshine together outside.
Another holiday program done and dusted for 2024! I’m sure a lot of families and children can relate, but wow did these two weeks fly by! Must have been because of all the fun we were having. The theme for HP was art attack and revolved heavily around crafting and creating which was a hit for most students! Week 1 we got creative decorating our own pencil cases with marble art and week 2 was ‘culinary canvas’! Each child had the opportunity to design their own pizza base to look like a face using different ingredients. They may not have resembled anyone, but they certainly were delicious! Laser tag, a trip to the movies, mini golf and Mama Museum were highlights of the holiday program.

Last Week: We welcomed term 2 this week after returning from school holidays in a fun and relaxed way. To ease back into things, the program was very light. We enjoyed different craft activities, including marble art which got a bit messy but was totally worth it, as the finished products were great! There were colourings competitions, 3 marker challenges and of course many uno games were had. We got back into baking on Wednesday and to start the term off strong, we made something that we’ve given a go many times here before but, this time we really hit the nail on the head! The classic scone recipe had all the children lining up for seconds. We whipped up our own fresh cream to pair with jam and butter, doesn’t get better than that! The popular game of choice has been golden child! The teamwork and support, especially in guiding and helping our kinders is beautiful to see, keep up the great work guys! 😊
This week: It is a bit mixed matched, but it won’t be a bad thing! The theme we will incorporate is Safari, and there are lots of cool activities lined up on the program to go along with this. We will get the paper cups, bowls, and plates out to make animal faces, binoculars, and safari hats, really getting ourselves into character. We will make beautiful silhouette safari sunsets and create some cool African animal pom poms using wool and cardboard. We will also incorporate special Mother’s Day activities so the children can express their love towards the beautiful women in their lives. On Wednesday the bake club will continue, this time we take a more savoury turn as we cook up some enchiladas! The recipe we will be using was borrowed from Jindera Public school ThierCare as it was a huge success for them!

What is the Premier's Reading Challenge?
The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge is on again! It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Its aim is to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure and to enable them to experience quality literature. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 10, and many students have rushed to express their interest in participating this year.
The PRC involves students reading books from predetermined lists, logging them online and at the end of the Challenge, receiving a certificate of completion. Any books on the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist that your child has read or you have read to your child during the summer holidays can be counted towards this year’s challenge, just note the title and the author. The PRC Booklist can be found here PRC Booklist
How do students participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge?
To complete the Challenge, students are required to read the following number of books:
Challenge level | Number of books you must read | Minimum number of PRC books | Maximum number of Personal Choice books | PRC booklists you can read from |

Library Borrowing
Please don’t forget that the library is open each lunch time for quiet reading and the opportunity to borrow books. Class time is also allocated for weekly borrowing. Students will require a library bag for the safe transportation of library books between home and school.
It’s not too late to start…
Challenge closes on Friday 23 August 2024
Update: So far St John’s students have read a staggering 1115 books….and we still have two terms to go!
While we are in our Autumn months and the weather starts cool with jumpers and jackets, the days can heat up resulting in those jumpers and jackets being abandoned around the school, in classrooms, in the playground, even in the office!
If your child's school uniform (including their hat) isn't already clearly labelled, please do so as soon as possible so if we find them we can return them to their rightful owner.
If your child brings home an item of uniform (including a hat) that isn't theirs, please contact the office, or let their teacher know so we can make sure it gets back to the rightful owner.
We would appreciate your help in checking hats and jackets/jumpers please.
