A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND LEADERSHIP TEAM

Student Wellbeing – Restorative Practices
This week, our teachers are sending you a Start of Term 2 email, outlining class information for you. Included in this email is an explanation of how we implement Restorative Practices at St John’s as a part of our approach to wellbeing, social and emotional learning, and positive behaviour. Our teachers and learning coaches participated in professional development in Restorative Practices with staff from Lutheran primary schools in Henty and Wagga Wagga at the start of this term. We are proud to join with other Lutheran schools around Australia in promoting this valuable and effective approach.

Please click on the following link to access a fact sheet on Restorative Practices from the NSW Government’s Education website:

Restorative_practice_fact_sheet.pdf (nsw.gov.au)

Restorative Practices are embedded in our daily school life and will be a focus for Term 2 with each class explicitly teaching interpersonal skills students use in Circle Time and Restorative Conversations. At each week’s Monday Assembly, students from different class will share how their class has used Circle Time.

Jesus brings healing

As a Christian school, Restorative Practices help us acknowledge when harm has been done to others and how to heal hurt. We are reminded that God created every single one of us as equally loved and valued, which is a powerful message in helping children develop a healthy sense of self. By accepting everyone and celebrating our differences, we create a welcoming school environment to help people feel like they belong. Jesus is the perfect example of unconditionally loving people – his example underpins how we are to treat each other at St John’s.As Jesus said in John 13:34 -“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Welcome back to a busy term! As you can see from our School Calendar on our website, we have many events to look forward to in Term 2 to further develop a wide range of skills in our students.

On our PD Day start of Term 2, we travelled to learn with our colleagues from Wagga Lutheran School and St Paul’s Lutheran School. It was a fantastic day working with Sam Kourakis, from AIS NSW, where she led all staff through restorative practices and how we support positive student well-being.

The final session of the day saw Anna-Marie Bothe from our school working with Henty and Wagga staff on project-based learning, while Dylan Evans from Wagga continued working on a restorative practice session with Jindera staff.

It was a fantastic day of collaboration and an example of our Riverina schools working together for the benefit of our students. It reinforces the power of InspirED and the intention of collaboration between staff in Wagga, Walla, Jindera and Henty.

InspirED is… A seamless P-12 Lutheran education in the Riverina:

INSPIRED is a community of four Riverina-based Lutheran schools providing a seamless educational experience from Pre-school to Year 12. INSPIRED families can expect a consistent approach underpinned by Lutheran values and a shared understanding of purpose and educational excellence.

Yours in Christian service,
Principal, Brad Moss

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Our School had the privilege of hosting the Jindera ANZAC Day on Tuesday 25 April, with the wonderful assistance from Jenny O’Neill from the Greater Hume Council.

The event was a momentous occasion and lovely celebration of our Anzacs. The sun was shining, community attendance outstanding and we were lucky to have a heartfelt speech from our guest speaker, Captain Neville Stott from Army School of Logistics Operations.

Thank you all who joined us for the occasion.
Mrs Anne-Marie Bothe and Mrs Alison Jafari

MultiLit at St John's

Over the last few years, the NSW Department of Education has been conducting a significant reform of the English Curriculum across all years of schooling. It is an opportunity to reenergise what we teach and how we teach English at St John’s. After careful research and consideration, St John’s is pleased to inform our community that in addition to continuing our use of SMART Spelling in Years 3-6, we have invested heavily into the MultiLit (Making Up Lost Time In Literacy) suite of evidence-based literacy programs. We join over 6,000 schools across Australia who are engaging with MultiLit teaching and assessment.

Using MultiLit literacy instruction allows St John’s to have a significant level of ongoing assessment, providing us with valuable data to track your child’s progress across their primary education. St John’s currently offers the following MultiLit programs:

If you have any questions about any of the above programs, please contact Alison Jafari.

YEAR 3/4 CAMP

MONDAY 8 MAY

The Year 3/4 camp to Echuca was an amazing success. It was wonderful to see students outside the school environment. Every student displayed their best qualities making our school proud. We were complimented on our engagement and behaviour during their interactions with the guides and public. The camp provided opportunities for each child (and adult) to step out of their comfort zones and support each other. From swinging on ropes, following instructions, to organising our belongings. We would like to extend a big thank you to Ben Berry for accompanying us and Mr Moss for providing the much-needed caffeine.

WE'RE MOVING ONLINE!

The time has come for St John's to move into the digital world for parent communication regarding School/student events!

You will see that we are slowly moving our events and surveys to an online platform utilising our Parent Lounge portal. We are working away in the background, to grow and utilise this platform to create a one-stop-shop for parents. This is an extremely positive step forward! Paper forms and notices in school bags will be reduced and it will also enable families to review upcoming events and information on your computer or mobile device at any time.

Please go to our website under 'Family Hub' to locate the link to the Parent Lounge portal.
Here, we've uploaded an instruction sheet for families to use on how to navigate and respond to events.

We appreciate this is an entirely new process for all families, so please don’t be shy and reach out if you’re having any trouble viewing events or responding; we’re here to help!

With thanks,

St John's Admin

The working bee will involve weeding, gardening, pruning and various other jobs - these will be allocated on the day.

If you're able to help us out, please complete this form to indicate numbers (for catering purposes) and what tools you can bring on the day.

We would love to see as many families as possible here to help clean up our School and get it looking in tip-top shape!
Many hands make light work, even if you can be here for a couple of hours instead of the whole day, that would be much appreciated.

We'll be finishing the morning off with a free sausage sizzle!

DESIGN LAB

This term the learner profile focus is ‘I can think deeply, critically and creatively’.

In Design Lab, all students across K-6 are engaging in a Jungle themed unit. The students are pretending they are stranded in the jungle and must complete different tasks and challenges to survive until they find their way out.

The K-2 students were tasked with creating a pet that will be their companion in the jungle. These pets could be animals that already exist, or they could create their own animal.

The 3-6 students first challenge was to create a shelter that could survive the many different types of weather, as well as keeping them safe from potential predators.

We look forward to sharing our work with you!

Design Lab Teacher

MUSIC AND ARTS

For creative arts this term we are going to be looking at Dance. The Kinders are doing a Circus theme, looking at the different parts of a circus and how you can use those movements to dance.

In year 1 and 2 we have started looking at how Dreamtime Stories can be represented through dance and how we can also tell our own stories through movement.

In year 3 and 4 we are doing Bush Dancing, which is so much fun! The students picked up the Heel Toe Polka routine really quickly and were able to help each other remember the moves. They did so well and really enjoyed it.

In year 5 and 6 we are looking at a different dance style each week. This week we did Step, which focuses on the rhythm that you make with your feet stomping and hand clapping whilst keeping in sync with the group. All the students did a short performance in front of their peers and did so well. It was great that all students got involved and had a go. Step is not an easy thing to do.

First week: There were lots of bubbly St John’s students who joined us for the holiday program held at Jindera public school! Some used the time to catch up with old friends, while others created new ones. I’m sure they will look forward to meeting again next holidays. Students mixed and mingled well, not just with other local kids, but children that came from all over our region, from Albury to Wodonga. It was only a short 4 days in the first week of holidays, but we had lots of fun as it was jam packed with exciting things. Lots of craft and group games, as well as an incursion that involved getting our hands a bit dirty fishing for water creatures. Can’t forget about the fun had at the trampoline place in Wodonga, students were kind and respectful on excursions, it was great to see.

Second Week: There were two awesome excursions during the second week of holidays that kept us very busy. Of course, a trip to the movies, a holiday classic. This time we seen Super Mario Bro’s. A big hit I have heard! The last day seen us travel a bit further, but the destination was totally worth the drive. Wiluna wildlife park in Chiltern exceeded all expectations and the children had a ball. It was a hands-on experience for the kids, they were allowed to get up close and personal with lots of different animals, from baby chicks and guineapigs to camels and reindeer.
Holidays are over as quick as they come but I can happily say they were a success! I was proud to represent St John’s thiercare and the students should pat themselves on the back for their amazing behaviour and attitudes!
